2007-2008 Season Past Lecture:

Manufacturing Perception: NFB’s “Planning Canada’s National Capital”(1949)

In recent years, engineers and urban designers have been working together to bridge the traditional gap between transportation planning and place-making. A new and progressive document seeks the best fit between the urban thoroughfare and the character of the surrounding neighbourhood. Will this document become the new common ground between large-scale mobility and local community-making?

Urban Forum screened a rare vintage National Film Board film on the post-war planning of the Capital Region. Panellists Caroline Andrew and Ken Gray reflected on the impacts of decisions made then and what we can learn from the past as we consider today’s issues and value.
