A Master Plan for 21st Century Havana

Havana experienced impressive growth during the first half of the 20th century but escaped the effects of urban renewal and overdevelopment during the second half of the 20th century. A team of Cuban architects led by Julio Cesar Pérez Hernàndez has designed a Master Plan for this UNESCO World Heritage Site that aims at preserving the city’s historic, urban and architectural legacy and while encouraging its future urban and economic development.

Julio César Pérez Hernàndez is a Cuban architect and urban planner. He is a past Loeb Fellow, Harvard University and adjunct professor in architecture in Havana and at the University of Toronto. Julio has lectured widely in the US and Europe on Cuban architecture and urbanism. Julio César Pérez is the author of a major new book on architecture and culture, Inside Cuba, published by Tachen (2006).
